Kuma Care

Food

  • He eats one flat scoop (1/2 cup) of Purina ONE Chicken and Rice kibble during each mealtime
    • Breakfast: 7-9am
    • Dinner: 5-7pm
  • He's generally not very excited about his food, so he may not eat most of it. You can just leave it out and then dump out the uneaten portion before refilling the bowl for his next meal.
  • You can also give him treats, for being a good dog, up to approximately 10% of his regular food amount
  • There is a vitamin treat (orange bottle) and dental treat (green bone shape) that you can give him once a day. The other retreats are in the rectangular treat box
  • The dog food and treats are located in the kitchen cabinet above the hot water boiler

Water

  • Please ensure that he has water in his bowl at all times
  • We usually have one water bowl in the living room and one water bowl in the bedroom next to the cabinets
  • Please wash out the water bowls in the dishwasher occasionally as well
  • You can use any bowl for his water

Pee/poop

  • Indoors, Kuma needs your help to pee/poo. We keep the potty pad folded up until he indicates that he needs to use the bathroom at which point we unfold it in front of the toilet
  • You can tell he needs to use the bathroom because he will be in your line of sight, but towards the bathroom
    • If you're sitting in the living room, he'll sit, leaning against the dishwasher
    • If you're in the kitchen, he'll sit, leaning against the wall next to the bathroom
  • Kuma generally needs to pee 3-4 times per day:
    • Morning, after waking up (around 8am)
    • Afternoon if you're home (otherwise he can hold it)
    • Late afternoon around 5pm after you come back home from work
    • Before sleeping
  • He poops 1-3 times per day, and you can tell he needs to poop because he will walk in circles around the pee/poo pad after peeing. His circles get faster and tighter as the poop becomes more imminent
  • When he scratches the door, it means that he wants to be inside or outside of the room. This happens more in the morning when he wants to go outside to pee or come inside to hang out with you.

Using the Potty Pads

  • We usually place some toilet paper below his butt so his poop lands on it and we can just toss it in the toilet. See this YouTube video.
  • You can reuse the pee pad up one or two times before throwing it away, but if any poop gets on it then just toss it
  • We usually wipe the dog's paws, penis, and butthole (if he poops) with a wet wipe after he's done

Potty pad and wet wipe storage

  • Potty pads and wet wipes are located in the plastic drawer under the bathroom sink
  • Extra potty pads are located in the fabric box in the closet next to the entrance
  • Extra wet wipes are hidden behind the fabric box in the closet next to the entrance (you may need to move the box to get to them)

Walking

  • We walk Kuma whenever we have an opportunity, which ends up being 1-3 times per week
  • He doesn't really need a long walk, but doesn't mind it either
  • He will start off pulling typically as he gets excited about and once he pees and poos he slows down
  • We try to hold the leash a bit tighter when we are crossing the street or when we see other dogs
  • Once he gets home, he will wait at the door for you to wipe his paws, butt, and penis areas before going in. We wipe him down before letting him back in the house so he doesn’t paw you with his dirty paws (NYC is a dirty, dirty place).

Sleeping

  • If you want Kuma to sleep outside the bedroom, then just close the door with him outside and he'll find a comfy spot in the living room
  • If he sleeps inside the bedroom, he'll alternate between the bed and the floor (or on the pillow above your head)

Leaving the house

  • If you are trying to leave the house, and Kuma desperately barks at you and whines, you can safely ignore him if:
    • He has water in his bowl
    • He was given food during his breakfast/dinner time
    • He has peed within the last 2 hours
    • He has pooped less than 4 hours ago

Other hygiene

  • We may wash Kuma but if he gets too dirty on his walks outside (i.e. , you can wash him or just his paws in the bathtub and with the dog shampoo
